The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) .has called on Publishers of Online Newspapers in Nigeria to support the full implementation of Nigeria Digital ID4D Project.
The coordinator, project implementation unit of the Nigerian Digital ID4D Project, Tito Ejenavi, made made the call at a roundtable discussion between the digital media gatekeepers and the NIMC, on Friday in Lagos.
According to her, the ID4D project has a singular objective to increase the number of persons with the National Identity Number, NIN through a robust and inclusive foundational identity system.
She stated that the call for media support comes from the understanding that the media plays a crucial role in shaping public opinion and disseminating information in the ever-evolving digital landscape.
She expressed confidence that a collaboration with the media will further enhance NIMC’s visibility, communicate the commission’s success stories, build valuable relationships and counter misinformation.
This, according to her, is because the media have the power to shape narratives and influence public perceptions.
“Your platforms reach millions of Nigerians and beyond daily, making you indispensable partners in our mission to build a more inclusive and digitally empowered Nigeria.
“While we appreciate your efforts and goodwill over time, we seek your continued support in spreading accurate information about the National Identity Management Commission and of course, the Nigeria Digital ID4D Project, while encouraging all Nigerians to participate in this transformative journey.
“Let us work together to ensure that no Nigerian is left behind in the country’s digital identity project.
“Your insights, feedback, and collaboration are vital as we move forward,” she added.
According to her, the media collaboration with the NIMC will also help to ensure that situations where certain groups are often inadvertently marginalized due to logistical challenges and social stigmas, particularly women and persons with disabilities are reversed.
She said: “We are committed to reversing this trend by ensuring that our ID system is inclusive, equitable, and accessible to all Nigerians, regardless of their socio-economic status, gender, or physical abilities.
“Our collaboration with the NIMC, the implementing agency for the Nigeria Digital ID4D Project, is pivotal.
“This is particularly crucial for marginalized groups, including persons living with disabilities and the rural poor,” she said.
Ejenavi thanked Abisoye Coker-Odusote, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the NIMC for her leadership and support to the Nigeria Digital ID4D Project, which is designed to facilitate access to essential services and, ultimately, to stimulate demand for these IDs based on the improved accessibility to services they enable.
